Its hip to be Green!

I have 3 parts to my recycling life, past, present and future.

Past: I remember saving cans & bottles to go cash in. It was always fun to see how much we could get. Then in SLO we had a bin provided to us to use for recyclables, same with Van Nuys and Palmdale. I forgot about the money factor for the goods, and it was just another place to put your more valuable trash. I did do a recycling contest with my 6th graders once though, I think we saved up $40 during our alternative resources unit.

Present: Living in out here in Lebec we don't have a recycling bin. But I have two extra garbage cans that are now collecting my cans and bottles. I took them in to be recycled at the place that gives you money the other day. It was a learning experience for me. First I arrived way to early so I had to take the kids to the park to wait for it to open. Then there was a opening crowd, but I still had to do some sorting so I got to people watch. I learned that if there is a rush you can just sit back and have a beer to add to your collection. I also learned that "there's no money in glass". And I thought we were doing this for the planet. Later that week I went to the dump and found more recycling bins for cardboard and such. Woo Hoo!

Future: Jerry and I would like to incorporate wind and solar energy into our house plans. We also want to collect the water from our roof to irrigate future gardens. Plus I will keep recycling my cardboard glass, aluminum and plastic. Goooo! Green!

It's definitely not the easiest route -- going green. I am glad you are making a go of it. Some people just laugh when we tell them we recycle and they say, "We aren't all green and stuff ..." Huh?? I don't get it. Anyhow, I guess plastic bags are no more in the San Francisco area. And our Von's now carries a reusable tote in lieu of plastic bags. I need to store all of my reusable bags in my car though because I always forget to bring them ....
